Village Scarecrow Competition

Scarecrow Competition 2020

The scarecrow competition is running again this year in the villages of

Pen-y-ffordd, Penymynydd and Dobshill!

Competition details.

  • Anyone is welcome to enter the scarecrow competition!

  • There is no entry fee, but it will be necessary to complete a registration form for data protection purposes.

  • The closing date for applications will be Sunday 16th August. Any applications received after this date may not be included in the competition.

  • Scarecrows can be started as soon as you see this information and must be on display by 24th August for judging to be completed by the following weekend.

  • There will be four categories to be judged, Under 11s, 12 to 18, and a family one. Prizes will be awarded for each category and further information will be publicised in due course. There will also be a local business trophy awarded as in previous years!

  • There is a possibility that scarecrows can be moved to the Vounog hill if the competitor wishes. This will be determined as the competition progresses and on demand.

  • Creativity and originality – judges will be looking for scarecrows with that little bit extra, it may be the materials used, the way the scarecrow has been made, how the scarecrow is displayed, or simply a fantastic idea that catches the judges eye.

Some Rules you will need to follow!

  • Minimum height of scarecrow is one meter from base of feet to top of head.

  • All scarecrows must be built from scratch by the entrant (no commercial creations allowed).

  • You can use any materials you like to build your scarecrow, there are no restrictions – with just one exception: pre-moulded or commercially available face masks ARE NOT permitted.

  • All Scarecrows must be made and displayed in good taste. Any entrant designing their scarecrow to cause deliberate offence will be disqualified.

  • All scarecrows must be displayed at the front of your property and should be positioned so as it is unnecessary for anyone to access your property in order to view them. They must also be secured in a manner that they will not blow away and will not otherwise be a danger to or possibly cause injury to anyone. Pen-y-ffordd Community Council will not be held responsible for any damage to Third Party property caused by the creation or insecurity of scarecrows. Owners are held solely responsible for the safety and security of their scarecrow(s) and removal at the end of the competition.

Competition Theme

There is no requirement to make the scarecrow to a particular theme but you can use one of your choice if you wish.

A suggested OPTIONAL theme of ‘Keep off our Sledging Field’ is a popular choice, and the reason for this is that the village is really worried by the prospect of houses being built on the sledging field of the Vounog Hill. The Inspectors public inquiry is due to be heard quite soon, and a public display of discontent may help our cause. There is also the current topic of Key Workers for the theme if you wish, so the choice is yours!

If you decide to use the sledging field theme, it may be possible to move your scarecrow to the field during the last week of August for a public display. Mr and Mrs Wrench whose family have farmed the land for over 100 years and always allowed sledging on their fields, will be this years judges.

Remember, this is a fun activity and intended to show Creativity and Imagination!

The most important rule is to enjoy yourselves!

Scarecrows must be completed and on display by 24th August
