Adam Bakewell - Volunteering Award

The Tom Jones Award for Outstanding Volunteering Contribution by a Young Person.

Towards the end of last year, the FLVC (Flintshire Local Voluntary Council) were on the hunt for a young person aged 14 to 25 who is deserving of an award recognising an outstanding contribution to volunteering in Flintshire.

We are extremely pleased to announce that the council nominated Adam Bakewell, our previous Youth Representative, and he was selected to receive this award. The award is the legacy of Tom Jones, a founder trustee of FLVC whose work as a long-standing Flintshire County Council and Community Councillor earned him an OBE.

Adam stepped down from his position as Youth Representative after he achieved excellent A level’s and started his new journey at Durham University in September.

He willingly gives of his time to support village events and fund raising and joined our Community Council as the Youth Representative in March 2019. Adam made an invaluable contribution and attended meetings, albeit virtually in the latter stages and whilst not eligible to vote he would join in with the discussions and played a very important part.

A member of our local environment group Adam was instrumental in organising a village tree planting scheme and was happy to join in with the planting and digging and not at all afraid to get his hands dirty.

A member of our village Scout Group he is a Scout team leader with Beavers and is an exemplary role model for our youngest children. His involvement with the youth of the village is not confined though to our youngest residents as he has supported projects within the village to consider and look at appropriate play provision in our parks. By talking with our youngsters he was able to provide insights into their needs. He always provides a balanced and realistic view but is a good advocate for the youth of the village.

Adam supported our older residents during the initial Covid19 lockdown and voluntarily collected daily newspapers and shopping to deliver to those unable to leave their homes. By doing so he supported our local businesses and enabled our older residents to look forward to their daily read.  He also delivered books from our community library and community letters.

Community minded and community spirited who puts the needs of others before his own Adam epitomises all that the Award represents. There will be an official awards presentation later this month.

Adam was extremely shocked when this was announced and has since said ‘I’d like to thank the council for the nomination, it came as a big surprise. I really enjoyed volunteering alongside many Councillors who have been working tirelessly for the local community for many years, who often go unnoticed’.
